Las Vegas Lawyer Gets 5 Years in Federal Tax Case

IRS, Tax Evasion, Tax Penalties

Prosecutors say a Las Vegas personal injury lawyer has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for his conviction on tax evasion charges. An Internal Revenue Service spokeswoman said Thursday that 47-year-old Edmund Botha was sentenced Wednesday. He was also ordered to pay $685,500 in restitution.

Botha was convicted by a federal jury last September of willful evasion of payment of income tax for the tax years 1998 through 2001.

U.S. Attorney Gregory Brower in Las Vegas says Botha owed about $4 million in taxes and penalties on some $7 million earned between 1996 and 2006.

Botha remained free on bond pending his surrender at prison Nov. 16.
